Morning Routine to Create Space

“This morning, with her, having coffee” - Johnny Cash
We all have our versions of paradise, for me, it’s a slow morning filled with softness. Spending the tender moments between sleep and being fully present, taking time to adjust to the world again.
The quiet magic of the morning is something to cherish. Some days I wake before the sun rises, if that’s the case I begin by boiling water for coffee. As I wait, I sit in the quiet with the animals and use this time to feel the space of where I am for the day. How does my body feel? What are the main thoughts taking up space this morning? Where are my emotions sitting? Although these are important questions, I do not do anything with them. Observe, then, let go.
By this time, the water is boiling and I move over to my next form of meditation, making the coffee.
First, gathering the ingredients then the process.
Add coffee to the pour over + slowly pour heated water over to let bloom.
Add milk to the frother + continue with hot water after initial boom sets.
Find a favorite mug and begin to add ingredients:
Collagen (skin elasticity + joint lubrication)
Superfood Honey (immunity + inflammation)
Cinnamon (blood sugar regulation + inflammation)
Once the coffee is done and the milk is frothed, I begin to slowly pour the warm milk into the mug while using a handheld whisk to blend. Once emulsified and fluffy, add the coffee.
With the first moving meditation complete, we mosey over to our favorite spot on the front porch and watch the sun rise as we sip our coffee.
This is where I continue to create space for myself.
Observing the colors in the sky as the sun peaks over the mountains, taking in the morning bird song, awaking to the day. This space is meant to be whatever I need it for, time to be quiet and observe, time to catch up on “social” things, watch the dogs play, really take in that morning coffee, or cry. There is no “right or wrong” in this space.
As the morning continues to grow into day, I move back inside to catch up with my planner, checking in on tasks and observing the week ahead. Using the time to do what calls for the day, doodling in the margins, creating actionable lists, leaving it blank when nothing needs to be said. I have recently begun a daily practice of pulling tarot cards, it has helped ground my mornings with a bit more understanding and help contribute softness on the “off” days.
I encourage you to find a morning ritual that resonates with your lifestyle and nourishes you throughout the day. This is a basic start to my mornings, when I have the freedom to bring them to life.
If you are looking to start your own morning routine, I’ve linked some of my favorite tools. Each one helps me create a space for calmness and creativity.
